ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

The Pigment Hunter : Artist in Residence Program will provide the space and resources for artists to process mineral pigments and plant materials into dyes, inks, and paints.  The AIR program will also provide studio space for drawing, painting, and printmaking for creating a diversity of art with natural sources of color.  The Artist in Residence program will provide a dedicated space for the processing of making paints with locally sourced natural materials along with a dedicated gallery space for exhibiting work to the community.

CURATION AND EXHIBITION

Pigment Hunter will be curating a space for the exhibition of art by founder Scott Sutton along with other artists who are creating work with natural materials and with subject matter that addresses environmental concerns or cultural issues that we face in the world today.  The dedicated gallery space will exhibit work on a monthly basis and will showcase the work of the artists in residence during their time in the Land of Enchantment.  The residency program will also help to facilitate the creation of site specific art or murals in public and private locations and at times in collaboration with other artists depending on the potential project.

WORKSHOPS & EDUCATION

The workshop and educational space will provide access to various equipment such as the mortars and pestles to grind minerals, sieves for sifting pigments, and glass mullers along with tables topped with glass for making paint.  Other equipment such as a rock tumbler will function as a ball mill for grinding larger batches of minerals into pigments along with a three roll mill for making inks and paints. Other equipment and facilities will assist in the production of art in the form of drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and silkscreening.

PARTNERSHIPS & COLLABORATION

Pigment Hunter is also hoping to collaborate and develop partnerships with other local artists, businesses, organizations, non profits, and cultural foundations to create opportunities to further the vision of creating a community rooted in place.  Some possibilities on the horizon are to help create a community garden focused on growing native and non native plants that can be harvested and used for the production of dyes and pigments, cordage and fiber, and basketry materials.

PIGMENT HUNTER AIR : SUNSHINE VALLEY

The future Pigment Hunter Artist in Residence space dedicated to exploring the world of natural colors in the form of plants and minerals will exist in Sunshine Valley.  This site will be a place to experiment with natural building techniques, earthen plasters, and the use of natural pigments for sources of color for natural paints.

I purchased a 40 acre parcel that will be provide the space for a future off grid home, art studios, and casitas providing a place for the creation of art and a residency for artists.

A masterplan will be drawn up for the site and its various uses along with the location of the future hemp lime building for a place to live and an artist studio for a place to work.  The land will also function as an event space for live music, farm to table dinners, and an outdoor environmental sculpture park.

An art warehouse space will be developed for working with a diversity of mediums from metal, ceramics, glass, wood, and stone.  The space will also contain a variety of traditional tools along with modern day equipment such as a cnc router, laser cutter, plasma cutter, and 3d printer.

A greenhouse and garden space will provide resources for both food, medicine, and dye along with native plants for restoring the local ecosystems.

This project will take a little time to develop, but the plans are to break ground this summer.  I will also be transporting my retrofitted shipping container from the location in Taos to Sunshine Valley, New Mexico this spring once the acquisition of the property is official.

The shipping container studio will function as a temporary place to stay when on the land working, an art studio to work in, and a place to store tools and materials. Over the course of this year additional infrastructure and functional spaces will be created allowing for the future development of the Pigment Hunter Artist in Residence program to expand its horizons to Sunshine Valley.
